Pacific State is an abstract painting full of movement and energy. I built the work through many different layers, adding, scraping away, spreading and splashing paint as I worked. As a result, traces of earlier layers remain visible throughout the painting, creating a real sense of depth across the surface.
The combination of different blues, soft greens and the strong contrast of the dark areas gives the painting its fresh colour palette. Small accents of magenta and yellow-green appear here and there between the layers. There is a lot happening in Pacific State, but the colours hold everything together.
The title comes from Pacific State, the 1989 electronic dance track by 808 State. To me, that track has always had an incredibly fresh, cooling quality. A bit like a cool shower on a hot, humid summer day. I recognise that same feeling in the colours of this painting, which is why Pacific State felt like the natural title.

Pacific State is een abstract schilderij vol beweging en energie. Ik heb het werk opgebouwd uit heel veel verschillende lagen, waarbij verf is aangebracht, weggeschraapt, uitgesmeerd en gespat. Daardoor blijven overal sporen van eerdere lagen zichtbaar en ontstaat er veel diepte in het oppervlak.
De combinatie van verschillende blauwtinten, zachte groenen en het sterke contrast met de donkere delen geeft het schilderij zijn frisse kleurstelling. Tussen al die lagen zitten hier en daar kleine accenten van magenta en geelgroen. Er gebeurt veel in Pacific State, maar de kleuren houden alles bij elkaar.
De titel komt van Pacific State, de electronic dance track van 808 State uit 1989. Dat nummer heeft voor mij altijd iets ontzettend fris en verkoelends gehad. Een beetje zoals een koele douche op een hete, broeierige zomerdag. Precies dat gevoel herken ik ook in de kleuren van dit schilderij. Daarom voelde Pacific State als de vanzelfsprekende titel.
