Roads

Large diptych abstract seascape painting (200x100 cm) by Liane Kusters with horizontal layers in muted blue and green tones, suggesting ocean waves and surf through soft transitions and textured paint, creating a calm yet slightly melancholic atmosphere.

Roads is based on the sea, but not in a literal way. There’s no detailed rendering of waves or a defined horizon line. Instead, the image is built from layered paint, applied with both brush and palette knife. What you see as surf is mostly suggestion.

The structure is simple: horizontal bands, shifting in tone and density. Within those layers, the movement of the water starts to appear. Not sharply, but enough to recognize the rhythm of waves breaking and pulling back. The color palette is intentionally restrained. This isn’t a bright, sunlit seascape. It leans more toward the end of winter, early spring, when the light is still muted and the water carries cooler, slightly greyed tones.

The title Roads is taken from the Portishead track. Not because of the lyrics, but because of the feeling in that song. There’s a strong sense of vulnerability in it. Fragile, but at the same time very present. The atmosphere is cool, almost cold, with a kind of quiet melancholy that settles in and doesn’t leave quickly. It’s reflective, slightly tense, and stays with you.
