This piece started without a plan. Just the urge to paint something, quickly, with a palette knife and no sketch underneath. It’s loosely based on an early morning in a nearby nature area, that moment when the light is soft but already breaking through. Still, nothing in this painting was drawn or constructed in a traditional sense. There are no lines, no outlines, no defined forms. Everything you see is built from smears and patches of paint.
It reads as a landscape – water, sky, trees – but that only happens in the viewer’s eye. The image emerges from the material, not from a predefined structure. That’s where the title comes from. Might Be A Landscape. It could be. But it’s just as much a study in paint, texture and suggestion.

Dit schilderij ontstond zonder plan. Gewoon de behoefte om even iets te maken, snel, met het paletmes en zonder enige schets. De aanleiding was een zonsopkomst in een natuurgebied hier in de buurt, dat moment waarop het licht net doorbreekt. Maar er is niets opgebouwd zoals je normaal een landschap opzet. Geen lijnen, geen contouren, geen uitgewerkte vormen. Alles is ontstaan uit vegen en plekken verf.
Het leest als een landschap – water, lucht, bomen – maar dat gebeurt eigenlijk pas in het hoofd van de kijker. Het beeld ontstaat uit het materiaal zelf, niet vanuit een vooraf bedacht ontwerp. Daar komt ook de titel vandaan. Might Be A Landscape. Het zou kunnen. Maar het is net zo goed gewoon verf, textuur en suggestie.
