Numinosity was inspired by a quiet morning at the edge of a heathland lake, just before sunrise. A circular open landscape surrounded by forest, where mist rises slowly from the water and silence feels almost tangible. On that particular morning, the air was heavy with fog, yet the sky remained clear. When the sun finally emerged, the mist ignited into an intense, almost unreal orange glow.
Standing there, I experienced a moment of deep awe. The kind of quiet, overwhelming respect for nature that feels both humbling and uplifting at once. The word numinosity refers to that sensation: a profound awareness of something greater, something luminous and beyond explanation.
Although abstract in form, this diptych is rooted in that specific landscape and memory. Layers of acrylic paint were built up and scraped back, allowing color to interact organically. Warm orange and coral tones meeting soft greens, muted blues and pale yellows. The two 60 x 60 cm panels together create a shifting horizon, suggesting both reflection and atmosphere.
Numinosity is an abstract landscape in essence, yet it carries the emotional imprint of a real place and a fleeting moment of light.
Acrylic on canvas, painted on two 4 cm deep stretcher frames. The work can be hung as a diptych with a narrow space between the panels.
