New Year’s Day is an abstract landscape painting built up from many layered applications of paint. No single shape is clearly defined; instead, the surface is composed of overlapping textures, softened edges, and horizontal movements that suggest a landscape without describing one directly.
Muted tones dominate the palette, with earthy colors, greys, and subdued light moving through the composition. Earlier layers remain partially visible beneath later ones, creating depth and a sense of weight. The painting does not depict a specific place, but rather an atmosphere.
The work is inspired by the feeling of New Year’s Day: a quiet, empty moment after the intensity of the holidays has passed. It is a day that feels suspended — neither beginning nor ending — heavy in its stillness. That sense of pause and subdued tension is reflected in the restrained color use and dense layering.
Despite its abstract nature, the painting carries a clear emotional tone: calm, muted, and slightly uneasy. It invites slow looking rather than immediate recognition.

New Year’s Day is een abstract landschapsschilderij dat is opgebouwd uit vele lagen verf.
